Chris Daughtry says he never really worried that he had just seen his big shot at a music career slip out of his grasp when he was voted off of "American Idol" by the show's audience last season — despite initially being considered a frontrunner for the title.
"I didn't feel like that," Daughtry said in a recent phone interview. "It was definitely a shock to me at that moment in time. You're in a contest and you get to a point where you want to win it. That's why you got in it. And then when that didn't happen it was like 'Oh,' so you have to kind of re-think your game plan a little bit."
Maybe somewhere inside Daughtry immediately knew that all was not lost. But he certainly couldn't have known how much good losing the way he did on "Idol" was going to do for his rock and roll career.
The dust — and the outcry over Daughtry losing any chance to win — had not even settled before it became clear just how big an impression he had made on the show.
"It took me about two days to get over it," said Daughtry. "I was like you know what, keep going with it and move on. Next thing you know, Clive Davis wanted to meet with me and the rest is history."
Davis is, of course, is the head of RCA Records and one of music's legendary record executives. He's had huge success in signing other "Idol" winners, including Kelly Clarkson, Clay Aiken and Fantasia Burrino. He certainly must have recognized that the groundswell of support for Daughtry — and the publicity that surrounded his departure from the "Idol" competition – made the singer a hot commodity.

Chris Daughtry is not an American original. He admits to and sounds quite comfortable with that, actually.
But he is an American success story. From his star-making run on the fifth season of American Idol – a stint that he no longer wants to talk much about, now that he's a hit-making, megaselling recording artist – to the sales records he and his self-monikered band, Daughtry, have broken, he's surpassed every expectation and prediction made by every critic, music-biz suit and obsessive modern rock fan.

Daughtry: We Love Our Popularity

Nobody in America has sold more records in 2007 than Chris Daughtry – 3 million and counting.
Given that proof of popularity and his 2006 run on “American Idol” as the show’s resident rocker sex symbol, you might think Daughtry’s head is growing with his record sales.
Don’t believe the hype. As Daughtry’s self-titled band prepares for its Aug. 9 concert at the Sioux Empire Fair the bald rocker offers a dose of humility.
“We love our popularity status right now,” Daughtry says. “We love that people love our music. ... We could be at the other end where people are throwing beer bottles at us and telling us to get the hell off the stage ’cause (we) suck.”
It's an interesting comment considering that's just what some people would love to say to Daughtry.
While the rock singer is unquestioningly popular, there are legions of critics and naysayers who rail against Daughtry because his debut album contains a host of songs sounding suspiciously similar to other platinum-selling rockers like Nickelback or Three Doors Down.
Surprisingly, Daughtry doesn't recoil at the idea of being a copycat or issuing formulaic radio-ready rock.
"It is a formula," he says. "Anything you hear on the radio has a formula to it. It's a formula that works. We want to write songs that people can sing along to. So far it's worked well for us."

Failed Idol Hits Big Time

Chris Daughtry is one of the biggest new names in rock music. It has been a hard and surprising climb. A year ago, he was voted off the American Idol TV talent contest and seemed to be just another failed contestant. But Daughtry was just getting started. He went on to form his own band and create a debut CD that has already sold over three million copies in the U.S. VOA's Larry London recently sat down with Chris to talk about his quick rise to success.

It has been an incredible year for Chris Daughtry. His debut album is the top seller of 2007 and his live shows are garnering rave reviews. Now his band, Daughtry, is on tour with the Canadian rock band Nickleback. But the rising star did not always think he was going to be a rock star.
"I wanted to become a comic artist,” says Daughtry. “I was in every possible art class through high school you could do. When I (finally) got into music, I knew that's the thing I wanted to do."
