Daughtry at the Layne Staley Benefit

Layne Staley benefit

Daughtry, Soulbender and Riverbend are among the acts scheduled for Saturday's sixth annual Layne Staley Tribute and Benefit Concert at 7 p.m. at The Showbox.

The former Alice in Chains lead singer, who died in April 2002 of a drug overdose, is still revered by Chains fans, who paid tribute to the fallen Seattle rock star shortly after his death. All proceeds from the event will go to the Layne Staley Fund, a nonprofit organization created 2002 to raise money for community chemical dependency facilities, drug education and outreach programs in a city that has seen more than its share of drug-related deaths. The fund was established by Nancy McCallum, Staley's mother, and Jamie Richards of Emerald City Musician's Network.

The lineup for the show (which coincides with Staley's Aug. 22 birthday) is impressive. Daughtry, which has cited Staley as a major inspiration for its music, has one of the top-selling rock debut albums of the year. Soulbender features Queensryche's Michael Wilton, as well as Travis Bracht, Ray Hartman and Chuck Miller. Bracht will sing a song with Daughtry, which also plans to sing the Alice in Chains classic, "Would." Up-and-coming Riverbend includes Izzy Gleason, Jesse Kaein, Cody James and Bryan Seeley.

The evening includes a jam band with guests from the Seattle music community, a special performance by McCallum and possibly a taped greeting from Alice in Chains members.

Alice in Chains reunited last year, with William DuVall filling in for Staley. A reunion tour included a concert at the Moore Theatre.

Tickets for the tribute are $25 at Ticketmaster. For more information, visit laynestaleyfund.com.
